By Roberto Quelne for La Estrella – According to estimates from the Panamanian Association of Hotels (APATEL) and the Panamanian Board of Tourism, between eight to ten new hotels will be constructed in Panama within the next three to five years, adding an additional 3,000 new rooms to the market. The hotel and hospitality sector is preparing to serve the growing number of tourists who are visiting Panama every year. In the first three months of 2007 (January to March), 389,258 tourists visited Panama, or 8.7% more than in the same period last year according to statistics from the Panamanian Institute of Tourism (IPAT). The numbers reflect only tourist hotels in Panama City which reflected an overall occupancy rate of 53.3% and an overall increase of 11.4% over 2006, and the numbers reflected were 65% from high-end hotels and 34% from secondary hotels. Jaime Campuzano, President of the Panama’s Tourism Board, said the country should implement an advertising campaign to promote the country as soon as possible to promote tourism in Panama.

Entre ocho y diez hoteles, en los próximos tres a cinco años, se estarán construyendo en Panamá, lo que se traducirá en un un incremento 3,000 nuevas habitaciones, según estimaciones de la Asociación Panameña de Hoteles (APATEL), y la Cámara Panameña de Turismo.

De esta forma, el sector hotelero se prepara para afrontar el incremento turístico en Panamá, que en el primer trimestre del año (enero a marzo de 2007) fue de 389,258 visitantes, un 8.7% más, con respecto al mismo período del año anterior, según cifras del Instituto Panameño de Turismo (IPAT).

Las cifras correspondientes a los hoteles con categoría de turismo de la ciudad de Panamá, en el período de enero a marzo de 2007, muestran un porcentaje de ocupación global de 53.3% con un crecimiento de 11.4% sobre el año 2006, siendo 65.0% para los hoteles de primera categoría y 34.0% para los hoteles de segunda categoría.

Jaime Campuzano, presidente de la Cámara de Turismo de Panamá sostuvo que se hace necesario que Panamá implemente lo más pronto posible la campaña publicitaria que se prometió para promover el turismo en el país.
